A Brief Introduction To The Plot

The plot of the show is centred around a rather shy boy Ippo Makunouchi. Due to his poor family conditions, Ippo is rather busy helping his mother run their family business, due to which he is unable to make any friends in high school. His shy and reclusive nature is what makes Ippo an easy target for the bullies in his school.

However, little by little, the bullying begins to worsen, and one day, Ippo ends up taking a serious beating, leaving him badly injured. However, he is saved by a professional boxer named Mamoru Takamura, who takes him to his training gym to tend to his wounds.

When Ippo wakes up, Takamura tries to cheer him up and asks him to vent his frustration by punching a sandbag and imagining his bullies’ face. However, this little exercise shocks Takamura as he sees a glimpse of Ippo’s hidden talents: “The boy packs a serious punch”. After being in the gym and practising on a sandbag, Ipoo makes up his mind to become a pro boxer. However, Takamura thinks that he is seriously underestimating what it takes to go pro.

Takamura is unable to imagine Ippo as a pro boxer but doesn’t have the heart to reject him outright. Therefore, he asks the young boy to do an impossible task and that too within a week. He asks Ippo to catch 10 falling leaves simultaneously in one swoop.

Thinking that this might discourage the boy, Takamura takes his leave. However, when Ippo sees his mother working soo hard every day, it lights a fire inside of his heart, and he begins to change himself. Therefore, after intense training, when Ippo finally manages to do the impossible, Takamura agrees to train him. Thus begins Ippo’s journey to becoming one of the best boxers in the entire world.
