The anime community has grown so much since its birth. Now you can find an anime for almost any genre and any taste. Many such anime follow the Yuri anime tag. Yuri means a romantic relationship between two girls. In this list, we’ll be looking at the top 10 Yuri anime for you to binge-watch.

A common misconception among fans is that the Yuri anime tends to occupy itself in fan service and ecchi. While it has its fair share of lewd anime series, many animes of the genre also focus on the emotional part of such relationships. The term is also called Shoujo- Ai. This anime is a great one to start your journey into the world of yuri anime. It follows Nagisa Aoi’s story as she begins her life as a student at St. Miator’s Girls Academy. The school is divided into three separate campuses, each having its own uniform, and operating separately, however, being the same in function.  

Among all the three schools exist two exceptional students called the Etiole or “star.” Shinuma Hanazono, an Etiole, seems to be interested in Nagisa! As their daily lives in the school unfold, we watch their relationships and interactions bring them closer. However, Nagisa begins to feel that something is off. 9. Simoun

In this series, we are thrown into a world where everyone is born female. When the girls turn 17 years old, they have to undergo a ceremony to choose their gender. In this war-torn world, 12 girls are selected to fly the Simoun, a flying ship that protects their world. They are called the Chor Tempest. At a time, only two girls synchronize with Simoun to pilot it. One condition to steer the ship is that they must refrain from undergoing the ceremony.

Aer is recruited as a pilot for the ship after facing an attack that destroys the last Chor Tempest. She must now earn her spot as a pilot of Simoun by winning the heart of Neviril, who lost her pair and is extremely saddened by the events. How will their relationships turn out? Will they be able to survive in this devastating world?

In this anime, we follow Yumi Fukuzawa, who enters the all-girls school, Lillian Girls’ Academy in Tokyo. In this school, she meets Sachiko Ogasawara, one of the prettiest girls here. She is popular around the campus and makes eyes turn everywhere she goes. 

The last thing Yumi expected was for Sachiko to approach her; however, that is precisely what happened. Sachiko offers to be Yumi’s soeur, or “sister,” and guide her throughout her time at the academy. This puts Yumi in a conundrum. She has to decide whether to reject or accept the offer, as she is thrust into the center of attention on the campus, and people all over start talking about them. This series follows the daily lives and romance of the girls.

This anime’s story is centered around a spirit village, where we meet Yuzu, the fox girl. She is a pleasant bundle of joy and begins her job at a high-end hot springs inn, Konohanatei. She is new to the environment but receives much support from Kiri, the reliable head attendant. While Yuzu initially makes many mistakes, her eagerness to learn and playful attitude end up helping her win all the customer’s and staff members’ hearts.

Yuzu grows to love the world around her as she meets new people- the stern Satsuki, the airheaded Natsume, the critical Ren, and the silent Sakura. We watch as she begins to grow a bond with her friends and feeling at home amidst the unknown. This is an amazing slice-of-life story with a heartwarming romance that you must watch if you want to sit back and relax.

6. Yuru Yuri

Yuru Yuri is an anime that follows the interactions of four girls living their middle school lives. In the second year, four girls unite to form the Amusement Club, where they entertain each other. The girls have tea and fawn over each other in their spare time as they continue the running gag of ignoring Akari, the main character, even when she is amongst them.

This anime is an excellent slice-of-life with a moe story and a cast of loli girls. However, the anime isn’t only limited to our four main characters, as we also find them interacting with the student council in almost every episode. This is yet another anime where you won’t be seeing much of the lewd side of Yuri anime, but instead the more emotional and romantic side. 

5. Oniisama E…

Nanaka Misonoo is a 16-year-old new to the Seiran Academy, where she wishes to have a bright future. However, the fortune that awaits her is filled with misery. In this academy, she finds herself stuck in the fallacies of her classmates. Thrut into a web of lies, deceit, and despair, she gets stuck even more, as she is chosen to be the newest member of the Sorority, a group of girls that are constantly the center of attention and envy from other girls of the school.

The show’s title arises from the fact that Nanaka keeps writing about her experiences to her former teacher, Takehiko Henmi. She affectionately calls him onii-sama (big brother). Writing to him gives her comfort and makes her calm. The story follows her as she faces bullying, doubts about sexuality, and many more challenges.

4. Asagao to Kase-san

Yet another anime set in the beautiful middle school setting, this series follows the lovely story of Yui Yamada and Tomoka Kase. Yui is shy and girly. She has never been in a relationship. In contrast, Tomoka is an extroverted, tomboyish girl, popular among her friends. The two of them start dating and bond over the unlikeliest of things.

This story shows a heartwarming take on the two girls’ relationship, as they grow to be fond of each other, sorting their differences and enjoying the happiness that comes with their first love.

This anime has received widespread critical acclaim for its story, visuals, and soundtrack. It has an exciting take on the magical girl trope. We watch the main characters, Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki, regular middle school girls living their lives as usual. Everything changes, however, when they meet the cat-like magical familiar called Kyuubey, and Homura Akemi, a new transfer student.

Kyuubey offers them something unconventional. He will grant any wish that they have, and in return, they will each become a magic girl. Homura advises them to reject the offer, as nothing is what it seems. This is the exciting yuri anime that has gripped many fans with its compelling writing and characters. The anime has its fair share of action and comedy.

2. Bloom Into You

This anime is notable, as it doesn’t fetishize the idea of Yuri and instead uses the romantic complexities of such a relationship to its benefit. It makes the story more complex yet relatable. The series is about Yuu Koito, who has a very romantic view of love. She has always wished to be loved and proposed someday. However, when it does happen, she feels incapable of feeling the love.

After joining High School, she is heavily discouraged, wondering what to do of her suitor. Soon, she meets Touko; seeing her reject a proposal in a calm and controlled manner, Yuri asks her for tips on the same. Instead, she gets confessed to by Touko! Soon, the story takes a quick and exciting pace. This is an excellent show in the more mature look on young, homosexual relationships.

1. Revolutionary Girl Utena

Utena Tenjou is saved from the grasp of depression upon receiving consolation from a prince after losing her parents. He leaves her with only a ring, bearing a strange red crest, and a promise that she will meet him again. After meeting him, she is so impressed that she decides to one day become a prince herself.

Now, years later, she attends Ootori Academy and becomes fond of a dueling game. Dressed as a man, she fights for one prize, the Rose Bride, Anthy Himemiya. She starts by dueling a member of the student council, Saionji, and defeating him in the process. The fascinating part of this story is that nothing is what it seems to be initially. The story has layers on layers to uncover, and the character development is great. It is an exciting watch, and an excellent Yuri anime.
