One thing that animes are known for is the variety of characters, specifically, female characters. And a battle of the best waifu has been up in the anime world for time unknown. Debates on forums and comments on YouTube videos, the struggle to establish the ultimate waifu never seems to end. So, here’s our pick of the top 10 best anime waifu’s–
10. Winry Rockbell (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
This series introduced us to many incredible female characters. But the one that sticks with me the most is that of heroine Winry Rockbell. She is the cute girl next door and the mechanic of Edward and Alphonse. Her skills in making and repairing automail are extraordinary. She is responsible for helping many people walk and function like normal. However, her skills aren’t just limited there- having doctors as parents, she also has some knowledge in first-aid, and it was under her leadership that a woman in labor was able to give birth to a baby safely.
Watching her in the anime, you can’t help but feel connected to her. It feels certain that she could be your friend and a great, understanding one at that. Her heart is pure, and even when filled with hatred, she was able to overcome it. She chose not to shoot Scar. She abandoned the warpath and chose mercy.
Moreover, she is always available to the brothers for moral support. She guides them to do what is right and supports them even if she may not entirely agree with their decisions. Her independence and logical approach to solving problems makes her a great waifu.
9. Holo the Wisewolf (Spice & Wolf)
This female demi-human wolf and protagonist of the series, this pretty bundle of joy, will have you enjoying every moment of the time you spend with her. She is intelligent and cunning, using her manipulative skills to get Lawrence to buy her food which could be very expensive. She’s a foodie and can gulp down a crate-load of apples instantly. Holo tends to be shy around others, but the time she has spent with Lawrence has made her grow fond of him, opening more of her personal side to him and being more confident around him. She’s often seen mocking his thinking and negotiating skills, so you know she has a great sense of humor.
Even though she is uncomfortable showing her wolf form, Holo will quickly transform when protecting Lawrence from danger. She is talkative and can serve and take jokes well. As a waifu, she will have interesting conversations with you hours on end with a wine glass in hand, as she is also an alcoholic. She loves herself some booze and will make a great drinking partner.
An adorable part of her personality is when she gets jealous of other girls talking to Lawrence. When Lawrence was thinking of keeping Nora, a girl with who he had quickly become friendly with, as a bodyguard, Holo was quick to speak up against it. One of her winning traits is that she is proud of herself but also aware that there are things that she doesn’t know.
8. Hitagi Senjougahara (Monogatari Series)
A character well-known for, but not limited by her beautiful appearance, Hitagi comes up multiple times in every waifu conversation. Her purple hair, enigmatic smile, and to-die-for head tilt are just a few reasons why she is best-girl material. She has a strong and confident personality and is not afraid to voice her opinions. Hitagi is smart and can ace tests without putting much effort into studies. Adding to this is her street smartness; she is quick-witted with her words and actions and is a fascinating character, occasionally seen breaking the fourth wall.
On a date with her, you will find yourself enjoying a lot, and if you’re into crazy girls, she is the whole package! She doesn’t hide the fact that she can be a tsundere, yandere, and even a kuudere. She accepts that her actions can be violent and abrasive. Initially, she is found to be emotionally reserved, but soon her sweeter inner emotions are revealed. And it’s adorable to see her progress throughout the series, showing more of her emotions.
That’s not to say we don’t absolutely love the neutral-gazed and insult-you-until-you-burn attitude. Her insults in themselves are deep and thought-provoking. Unafraid and cute, this absolute beauty is the waifu choice of many anime watchers.
7. Konata Izumi (Lucky Star)
The leader of the Lucky Star crew, and the protagonist of this anime, Konata, called Kona-chan lovingly by her friends, has many traits of the dream girl of a gamer. She loves anime and manga and keeps referencing characters from various franchises throughout the show, mainly to annoy her friend, Kagami. She is influenced by her father and also loves to play adult video games. Being around her would be fun and entertaining.
She can be eccentric but is also very talkative and outgoing. Konata is passionate about pranking and teasing her friends, and hilarity is guaranteed to ensue when she is around. With her mischievous and sarcastic personality, she has a good-natured sense of humor. While she avoids studying and is very lazy, she is an expert at pulling out all-nighters and quickly copying down Kagami’s homework.
Konata’s fear that she will miss watching her favorite anime if she joins a club or participates in athletics has resulted in her avoiding them altogether. Surprisingly, however, she is very athletic in competitions and programs. And it’s a huge plus as a waifu that she is a fan of the Haruhi Suzumiya series.
6. Rin Tohsaka (Fate/Stay Night)
One of the most popular tsundere, Rin, is undoubtedly a very famous waifu in the anime world. Her character is fundamental in the Fate Series, and we spend a lot of time with her character. She is a woman who has high goals and expectations of herself, and she tends to achieve them. As a waifu, she will push you to be your best self. Her complexity makes her much more likable and believable, as she is not just a one-dimensional tsundere but has a character that you must carefully study to actually understand.
She is responsible and can be rude or bossy but ultimately cares deeply about others. At her school, Rin is widely regarded as a model student, being resourceful and competitive. She claims that her decisions are always made logically and with a cool head. While she seems to be a perfect student and young girl, she has her flaws, making her more normal and likable.
5. Zero Two (Darling In The Franxx)
She is one of the strongest pilots and has pushed through many obstacles. This anime waifu has a charming smile and scary glare while also being playful and constantly active. She will grab onto any chance of having an adventure, as she loves the adrenaline rush that comes with it. She is fond of exploring and especially loves swimming. Being around her, everyone feels at ease. She doesn’t shy from being vocal about her feelings, which is always calming for the other younger pilots.
Even in tense and dramatic situations, she can crack jokes and occasionally shows off a pervy side. Her calm personality is reassuring for her team, making them feel that everything will be fine. She loves playing pranks on her crew and telling them stories as well. So you know that you won’t be bored around her.
While she is highly independent and tends to avoid asking for help from others, she is always ready to help her loved ones when they are in need. She had a very rough childhood and can become dangerous to be around sometimes. While she doesn’t have much regard for human life, she develops feelings for Hiro, as the time they spend creates a solid bond between the two. The depth in her story, coupled with her openness makes her a very likable and relatable character.
4. Makise Kurisu (Steins;Gate)
Kurisu is a waifu that fans all over can’t help but fall for. She is an intelligent science student who graduated from university at the age of seventeen. If the red hair doesn’t already make you fall in love with her, the tsundere vibes that she exudes will get you. She is usually seen as hard-skinned and rude, but it’s very easy for Okabe to geton her nerves, and she flusters a lot while around him. The arguments between these two central characters further leads to an adorable romance.
Her intelligence is very attractive, and she has earned critical acclaim in the scientific community with her research, and in our hearts with her personality. She feels extremely annoyed when others call her tsundere. She is practical and has a realistic approach to any situation. Watching her get flustered and slowly grow closer to Okabe is a journey in itself.
3. Asuna Yuuki (Sword Art Online)
The heroine of the SAO series, Asuna, is well known in the anime world. Her presence made the isekai anime famous for its romance. Asuna is one of the prettiest anime girls, and her personality quickly makes you like her. She was introduced to the show with some very tsundere-like characteristics. However, she shows some remarkable growth throughout the series.
When we first see her, Asuna is extremely afraid of dying inside the game. This changes as she spends more time with Kirito and pushes herself to become stronger and better. It is always attractive to see someone strive to achieve something and then gain it. Her quick moves with the Rapier earned her the nickname “The Flash,” moreover, she was the sub-leader of a guild.
To remain connected to the real world, Asuna picks up cooking in-game, introducing us to her divine creations. As a waifu, she will cook you up the best of meals while also being skilled at fights. With the harem of girls that Kirito has built over the years, Asuna’s support for him has never wavered. She has always been strong as a rock beside him, while stuck in the game and while she was in a coma. Her faithfulness is something that anyone will admire.
2. Rem (Re:Zero)
Despite being a side character of the widely popular anime series, Re: Zero, This girl was able to race past the main female interest, Emilia, and into the hearts of viewers. Perhaps it has something to do with our attraction for the underdogs. She is seen working as a maid, even though she is really powerful. Her humble nature shines through in her willingness to be a maid and her pride in the job.
A very endearing characteristic of Rem is the fact that she is loyal in love. As a girlfriend, she would be capable of holding all of your trust. She would never cheat on you. In fact, she is so pure that she doesn’t even hold any ill feelings or grudges towards Emilia when Subaru says that he has feelings for her. Rem doesn’t treat Subaru or Emilia any differently and even supports Emilia.
She is a waifu that will trust you more than you trust yourself. She will understand you completely. A lovely side of her is that she will go to any extent to protect the ones she loves. Her love for her sister Ram runs extremely deep, while she will also do anything to protect Subaru.
1. Megumin (Konosuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World!)
Topping this list is surprisingly a loli. Megumin is one of the main protagonists of the series and the Arch Wizard of her clan. She is usually seen in a witch’s attire, with an eye patch that she jokingly claims seals her powers. Like the rest of the Crimson Demon Villagers, she has chuunibyou, or eighth-grader syndrome. Megumin is very intelligent and usually calm. However, she also gets over-active and dramatic, which might lead to dangerous situations.
She absolutely loves explosions. The kind that blows up a large area, causing a giant cloud of blast. Upon learning the skill, she decided that she “must cast Explosion once a day or die.” Moreover, she is very protective of her friends and loved ones. Cute and with many adorable qualities stuffed into her tiny body, Megumin is a fan favorite.
The Waifu Wars have shown no sign of ending anytime soon, and every new season, with the introduction of cute and lovable new potential waifu’s, the field gets more and more crowded.
