What Is Boruto’s Jougan? Pure Eye Power and Abilities Explained

When the Boruto manga first debuted, most readers took notice of one thing. Boruto had some radical changes and looked very different. The scar over his left eyes was most noticeable, but we also saw various tattoo markings, and something was different about his eyes.

Fans had already begun speculating what this could be and what signs it showed for the series. What is Boruto’s Jougan? and how does it function? How will this ability affect his life?

It’s been almost four years since the manga debuted, and we now have many answers and theories about Boruto’s ability. We’ll be looking at the facts and the assumptions on Boruto’s eye. If you’ve ever had a question about Boruto’s Dojutsu, this is where you’ll find the answers.

What Does The Jougan Look Like?

In the manga, the eyes look featureless with a barely visible pupil. Whereas, in the anime, the Jougan is blue with a darkened sclera and visible pupil.

What Is The Jougan?

The Jougan, which can be translated as “Pure eye,” is a Dojutsu that Boruto possesses. It is a form of Kekkei Genkai and comes from the Otsutsuki clan. Its abilities are only known to the Otsutsuki clan, whose members claim that it is troublesome and inherited.

The writers haven’t given us a lot of information on the Jougan. We know that Boruto possesses the ability and hasn’t fully mastered it yet. The first look we had of the power was a short and quick scene with adult Boruto battling Kawaki. So we know what it’ll look like once it’s completed.

What Is The Origin Of Boruto’s Jougan?

The Jougan is a type of Dojutsu, but it is different from the other Dojutsu’s since it doesn’t have a natural progression.

The Sharingan develops to form the Rinnegan. The Byakugan develops to form the Tenseigan. However, Jougan is a standalone ability. But just like the others, its roots lie in the Otsutsuki clan.

The Genetic Theory

Kaguya Otsutsuki divided her powers between her sons, Hagoromo and Hamura. Hagoromo, an ancestor of Naruto, gave him the Sage of Six Paths ability, received the Rinnegan. While Hamura, Hinata’s ancestor, received the Tenseigan. Thus, Boruto is related to Kaguya from both sides of his family and therefore possesses the genetics for jougan.

Toneri Otsusuki

In The Last: Naruto the Movie, we were introduced to Toneri, who kidnapped Hinata and performed some unexplained experiments that modified her DNA. Some Fan theories state that perhaps this has something to do with Boruto’s ability.

We also see that Toneri is keeping an eye on Boruto. He says in Boruto’s dream that He’s going to be the star of hope against the destruction that will eventually come to pass. We haven’t been given much information on why he holds so much interest in Boruto, but it most likely has something to do with the Jougan.

Momoshiki

In his final battle, we saw Momoshiki make a chilling prophecy, “Those blue eyes of yours will take everything from you.” Some fans believe that here, he is talking about the Jougan. Even the Otsutsuki clan members have said that they find the ability troublesome. Perhaps these statements are related.

What Are Boruto’s Jougan’s Abilities?

We still haven’t seen all the abilities of the Jougan. From what we have seen, though, we can say that the Jougan can see the flow of Chakra, much like the abilities from Sharingan, and sense it. But he can also see the Chakra pathway system, like in the Byakugan. Since Chakra plays such an essential role in the series, Boruto might use this ability to gather information in defense and even in the offense.

Like Naruto, even Boruto can sense negative energies thanks to his Jougan. He can see through the invisible barriers that connect two dimensions. One is the physical realm where the main story takes place, and the second is the connecting dimension that exists just past the first one.

The Jougan also lets him predict and the location of the portals that the Otsutsuki clan members use (called the Yomotsu Hirasaka). An animator from the show revealed that the Jougan is more powerful than the Byakugan and even the Tensegan. Boruto is already very skilled, and along with this potent ability, he will become a massive powerhouse in the series.

Uses Of Boruto’s Jougan

While Boruto’s eye is still a work in progress, we know that it is connected to the dimension that Kage’s clan uses. Boruto could not activate it on command in the beginning. Instead, when he focused on an object or person, it would get activated involuntarily. As a teenager, Boruto can activate it at will.

We have already seen that Boruto can travel between dimensions, but he wasn’t aware of what he was doing and just winging it. Currently, the only ninja who can freely move between the dimensions is Sasuke. In doing so, he loses a considerable amount of Chakra, and it leaves his Sharingan deactivated for a long time. We believe that Boruto will be a crucial piece in helping Naruto and Sasuke travel to the other dimension without using up Sasuke’s energy, thus allowing him to fight full power against the higher-ups of the Kage clan alongside Naruto.

What Will Be The Future of Boruto’s Jougan?

In the anime, Boruto’s eye power hasn’t been officially called the Jougan yet. An animator on the series, Chengxi Huang, posted a picture of Boruto on his blog, along with the name Jougan. He also said that Ikemoto and Kishimoto hadn’t yet thought out the full depth of the power. He noted that the Jougan would be fleshed out more with time and infused better into the story.

Initially, they were focused on giving Boruto an edgy, catchy first look to attract viewers. They hadn’t entirely thought about the markings on his body and the eye powers of Boruto’s Jougan.

It also seems that the Jougan gives Boruto a speed and power boost, as we saw him easily dodge an attack from Momoshiki, hitting him with a Rasengan. This was when even the Kage’s struggled to battle against him.

What Are The Marks On Boruto’s Body?

When Boruto killed Momoshiki, he was given a Kama seal by the latter, and this made Boruto a vessel for his Chakra by transferring his Kama to Boruto. This gives Boruto a few mysterious abilities, and while the seal develops, Momoshiki will be able to manifest into Boruto’s body. Due to the seal, he can retain knowledge and skills learned by Boruto and will be able to gain control over him once he is sufficiently weakened.

When we got a glimpse of adult Boruto, markings were seen throughout his body, and they also seem to be linked with his Jougan.
